Call of the Loon
We scored another first yesterday morning on upper Long Pond. We were not 50 yards from the dock when we saw of our two Tracy Cove chicks up against the shore. We motored over and within three to four minutes, there were numerous splashes and our chick disappeared! Less than 30 seconds later, an intruding adult loon popped up but still no chick. Where did this intruder come from? What happened to our chick? MASS PANIC SET IN!! More…
Dams Report
We’ve had numerous close calls this summer, but fortunately the Belgrade Lakes have avoided the severe flooding that many of our neighbors north and east of us have endured. Well, we got nailed this time with 4″ of rain in less than 24 hours. We were prepared for 1″ or 2″ of rain, but not for 4″. This unfortunately resulted in washing out several of our neighbor’s docks. Good Prose: The Art of Nonfiction by Tracy Kidder and Richard Todd grabbed me because of my having read and remembered Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains and Strength in What Remains. I did enjoy reading how these two friends and writers grew into this book of knowledge about writing investigative journalism and the editing process. More…
Take It Outside
Many of the roads entering our watershed have welcoming signs calling it a place “where memories are made.” There was definitely a lot of that going on last week. We had over two dozen members of my wife’s family in from as far as Hong Kong for a family reunion of food, swimming, biking, listening to loon calls, etc., while over on Messalonskee Lake, my friend J.J.
