Ponds Slightly Higher Than We Would Like

by Dick Greenan

With the Summer of 2024 in full swing, our pond water levels are slightly above where we would like them to be. As I pen this week’s column, we had another downpour this afternoon — so what else is new?!

According to our daily data logger reports (below), the Village spillway dam is 3″ above full pond with one gate opened 3′. With Long Pond, at least at the Wings Mill Dam, is 4.2″ also above full with Gate 1 opened 2′6″, as you can see on the data logger. Whereas at my dock, 9 miles north, we are 5″ above full due to the recent deluges and Long Pond’s steep watershed. Salmon/McGrath is doing well at 2.16″, also above full and with its calibrated valve set at the minimum 1 cfs mandate. Messalonskee Lake, a.k.a. Snow Pond, is, as of this writing, 3.12″ below full, due to their electricity generation needs, and the fact that they can fortunately handle a ton of water!

If the weather forecasters are at least close, we are looking at only 0.82″ for the next ten days — finally some Chamber of Commerce weather! It’s about time and I think we all deserve it! If you have a particular questions regarding our dams and/or water levels, please email your inquiry to dickgreenan@outlook.com. We will try to answer your question either in this column or via email.
