Peter McManus Leaves Lasting Legacy
Peter McManus, long time resident of Belgrade Lakes, passed away peacefully with family and many Great Pond Yacht Club friends by his side on May 24, 2021.
Although he was raised in New Jersey, Peter spent his entire life summering in Belgrade Lakes, where his parents met at their respective family camps on Great Pond (Hathaway and McManus Camps). Peter moved permanently to Belgrade Lakes in 1985 where he owned and lovingly restored the Forecastle Inn (now 7 Lakes Inn). An avid windsurfer, Peter also opened a windsurfing shop in the Village. He served on the Belgrade Lakes Association Board for 25 years.
Peter had many hobbies, including refurbishing sailboats, water and snow skiing, and doing puzzles. He enjoyed going to Day's Store for donuts.
Above all, Peter loved to sail and was instrumental in founding the Great Pond Yacht Club, where he was race director. Peter was an avid sailor and shared his passion with countless people, always lending a hand, offering advice and taking would be sailors out on the lake on his Minuet to show them the ropes. He often traveled with his Belgrade Lakes buddies in search of the perfect sailboat, including road trips to Canada in pursuit of a Minuet. A familiar site on Great Pond stream leading to the Village is a fleet of lovely Minuet sailboats that Peter generously safeguarded on his dock for friends in the Great Pond Yacht Club.
His cousin, Peter Schultz, will be towing Peter's Minuet in the July 4th Boat Parade. Donations in Peter's memory can be made to the BLA or Great Pond Yacht Club.
