When the 4th Falls on Friday

by Esther J. Perne

When the 4th of July falls on Friday here in Maine, a whole summer weekend lies ahead, full of possibilities for activities and outings or just doing nothing.

A Friday 4th of July fits in conveniently with all the celebrations the area has to offer and with the extra time that’s available to watch a parade or stroll a downtown or enjoy entertainment or children’s games or definitely be fascinated by fireworks.

On July 4, 1777 when the first anniversary of independence was celebrated, a strong, enduring (and endearing) tradition was established — fireworks!

Fireworks illuminated Philadelphia Harbor, they illuminated Boston Common and they illuminated that sense of unity that a new country with a new beginning was experiencing.

This summer the fireworks of July 4 will be illuminating a sense of unity, too, one that connects so many residents, vacationers and visitors to this region, with its beautiful setting, its abundance of outdoor recreation, its quiet towns and quaint community gatherings and its welcome to a Friday holiday when a whole summer weekend lies ahead.

Enjoy it all. But first….the fireworks.
