Lake Levels Are Right Where They Need To Be
With the unofficial beginning of summer this week, our pond water levels right where they need to be. As I pen this week’s column, according to our daily data logger reports, the Village spillway dam is 2.52″ above full pond with Long Pond, at least at the Wings Mill Dam, 3.12″ above full with all gates still closed. At my dock, 9 miles north of the Wings Mill dam, we are 2″ above full which is still in the ballpark. Our neighbors on Snow Pond are 3.84″ below full, due to their electricity generation needs. Salmon and McGrath are also in good shape at 3.84″ above full pond with the mandated 1 cfs calibrated valve opened its 15 turns.
If you recall, due to the extended forecast of another drought with an average 26% less precipitation, the Dams Committee has opted to once again to maintain all of the pond levels at 3″ above full pond, which saves some water, gives us a bit of breathing room yet should not float anyone’s dock nor wash out any native hummock loon nests.
We received a paltry 0.29″ of precipitation for the past ten days, and if all comes to fruition, 1.12″ for the next ten days. The gardeners and farmers amongst us are not quite dancing in the streets (OK, fields) but this week’s forecast is an improvement and of some help. My mother used to say, “When you’re dealt lemons, make lemonade!” A very bright and astute woman! And believe me, we had our weeks of rain growing up on Winnipesaukee. If the forecast holds true, this week is not going to be a washout, where we’re all stuck inside playing Scrabble or cribbage! Which I guess isn’t all that bad especially if there’s some popcorn!
