In 2018, Down East Books published the Kid’s Guide to Maine by Eileen Ogintz, which I purchased at Barnes and Noble’s air-conditioned lunch stop.
It lists many Maine activities for big kids and little. Biking the miles and miles of Rockefeller Carriage Trails in Acadia was a new idea for me. How he loved the natural untraveled by car areas of that gem of pink granite shoreline beauty. Rockefeller had umpteen stone bridges built to preserve his love of that northern part of Maine’s pristine coastline.
The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath is very kid-friendly with indoor and outdoor exhibits to explore. The short hour and a half harbor tour to lighthouse also sounds fun.
Sunscreen warnings for skiing or snowboarding sounded helpful. Only two ski resorts in the U.S. prohibit snowboarding now, so the sport is welcomed in Maine everywhere.
Year round kid’s activities for Mainers and those “from away” make you want to go outside where the action is. Good for all ages to try together or on your own if safety is considered carefully beforehand. How to eat a lobster, Motor Ice Boat invention, famous people (L.L. Bean, H.W. Longfellow, Rachel Carson, and George H.W. Bush), puffin viewing, whale watching and moose warnings and more are all covered in this guide.
Monmouth Theatre, known for its fine Shakespeare productions, offers special shows for children as well. Look on p. 73 if you want to know about spyhopping or bow-riding or other whale lingo…
Always leave your picnic area cleaner than when you found it: kids are great helpers and adults can easily set a good example for keeping nature the way it ought to be.
